A NOTE FROM MERLIN'S RING..
Occasionally, a glossy magic magazine finds its way to my ancient abode. In addition to the adverts, constant pleadings for new recruits to the magic scene catch my eye. Why? Surely, magicians do not need to huddle together, like anglers or stamp collectors? Reading minds or defying the laws of nature puts us apart from other mortals. The very nature of a "Society of Magicians" is an anachronism, unless its function is to keep everyone else out. Instead, all I read is 'promote magic, encourage new members, get them young' Those who make money from magicians; the dealers, publishers and writers, wanting increased markets for their products and even fatter wallets, although to some extent understood, surely only serve to devalue magic in the long run. If any Tom, Dick or Harry- and I expect you know a few- can be a magician, who will be left to marvel? Please do not take this wrong, I am very thankful for Magic shops If it were not for these magic shops, I would never have become a magician in the first place. However, lets face the reality of it. Why do we pay $60 for a 10-page instruction book on how to make yourself float an "amazing" 3 inches off the ground? Dealers claim that the prices are set high to keep away the idly curious. You and I are paying for the secret and not so much for the trick itself. Is there not a better way to keep our secrets out of the hands of the public, instead of taking an exorbitant amount of money out of our pockets? If we can share secrets within a "Secret" organization that would be the most economical. Oh course inventors of magic tricks should also be able to receive payment for their ideas, no questions there. But who is really making the money? The inventor or the dealer? Its a hard question. I tried to tell Reginald Scot in 1584, but he went on about witches being burned! Since then everyone has been writing books on how to cut bits of rope and restore them only a few inches shorter) No, forsooth, the real practitioner of the mystic art will soon find a kindred soul with whom to exchange techniques, if he must. However, to see knew recruits, and then adorn them with bits of cheap jewelry, sashes and fancy collars, perpetuates the idiocy and reduces the level of magic and illusion to that of some minor association of grocers or brass-rubbers My solution was to form the truly "Secret" society of magicians, here we can openly share ideas, exchange secrets, Illusion plans, buy and sell magic, market our new tricks to each other and so on and become better practitioners of the Art. With NO FEES I am not against magic clubs, in fact I am a member of several national and international societies of magicians, They serve a purpose and for the most part are really great. This site is just another option! Merlin's Ring is A Secret society of magicians. This is a MEMBERS only site; there are no fees to join and no annual membership dues, any pins, buttons or membership cards. (Who could you show them to anyway if they are secret!)It is just a great meeting place for Magicians. Membership is by application only.
